About San Francisco (of Assisi)
Saint Francis (or Saint Francis of Assisi), a Catholic friar from Italy, was according to the famous Italian author Dante Alighieri the “light that shone on the world” and for many, one of the main figures of Catholicism since Jesus. Saint Francis founded the medical order of Friars Minor (or Franciscans), renewed and reinvigorated the Catholicism in force at the time. Following the itinerant and frugal example of Christ and the letter of the Gospel, he identified himself with humanity and its sufferings.
His affirmation was kindness and love for all, the splendor of Creation both in Nature and in Humanity, especially at a time when the world was seen only in its most negative sides and in the evil of man.
In 1228, just 2 years after his death, he was canonized by the Catholic Church.
His appreciation and love for nature has made him known worldwide as the patron saint of animals and the environment.
