Sandalwood is a tree that grows in southern India. Its precious oil is collected from the center of the trunk, being purer if the tree is less than 60 years old. The wood is ground into powder and then steam-distilled into oil for use in soaps, cosmetics, candles, medicines, perfumes and incense. The outer part of the wood is used to make beads or carved to make statues of deities.
