About San Pedro
Saint Peter (in Greek stone or rock) was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament and, more specifically, the four Gospels. The Catholic Church considers Saint Peter to be the first bishop of Rome and, therefore, the first Pope. He is, to this day, the holder of the longest pontificate in history, some thirty-seven years. His original name would be Simon, but Christ, in Matthew 16:18, baptizes him Khepas (rock, rock), comparing him to the rock, cornerstone of the Church:
“And I declare to you: you are Kepha and on this kepha I will build my Church and the gates of hell will never prevail against it.”
