about dreamcatcher
The dreamcatcher is an object originating from the Ojibwa people, a native people of North America. A dreamcatcher is composed of a circular hoop on which a spider's web-shaped net decorated with feathers and various beads has been placed.
In the Ojibwa language, the name of the dreamcatcher is asabikeshiinh (spider) or bawaajigenagwaagan (dream trap).
Ojibwe oral tradition tells a story about the origin of the dreamcatcher:
Legend tells of a spider woman named Asibikaashi who took care of the children and needy people of the Ojibwe people. But that task became difficult when the Ojibwe people began to spread across American territory. For this reason, mothers and grandmothers began to weave nets with magical properties to help ward off bad dreams and nightmares.
Over time, this amulet began to be used as a pendant, in necklaces, in bracelets, (…) becoming a symbol of permanent protection and not just when sleeping.
