The Legend of Krishna and Kalyia
This image refers to the legend of Krishna and Kalyia, the multi-headed serpent (naga). The Kalya serpent took over the Yamuna River, poisoned its waters and destroyed nature on its banks. Krisnha jumps into the river and defeats the deadly Kaliya. Krishna jumps and dances on the various heads, always playing his flute. Kaliya's various heads succumb and are replaced by others until exhaustion. Krishna, unperturbed, continues to play the flute, revealing his strength of determination, wisdom and concentration. Out of mercy, Krishna spares Kaliya from certain death and drives out the serpent.
The Kalya serpent with its many heads symbolizes the countless desires that arise in us. Whenever a desire is fulfilled, another arises to replace it.
