The Saint Benedict Cross Medal: The Saint Benedict cross, of uncertain origin (estimated to be from the 15th century) became famous in the descriptions of Saint Gregory due to its effective use by the Patriarch against the assaults of the Devil. There were also several reports of condemned witches who present the cross as an impediment to performing any type of witchcraft or enchantment in their presence. Pope Benedict XIV recognized and approved the medal of Saint Benedict in 1742, consecrating the prayer on the back of the medal as an exorcism prayer (becoming known as Vade Retro Satan). Although there are several versions of the medal, the most famous and the most recurrent was set in 1880 by the monks of the Abbey of Monte Cassino to celebrate the 14th centenary of the birth of Saint Benedict.
On the front of the medal, an image of Saint Benedict, dressed in monastic robes, holds a cross in his right hand and a pennant in his left hand, representing the Rule. On the right, we see a viper escaping from a glass of wine (referring to the attempt to poison Saint Benedict) and on the left, a crow takes the poisoned bread.
Below: Ex SM Casino MDCCCLXXX – From the sacred Monte Cassino 1880.
On the sides: Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti – Cross of the Holy Father Benedict.
The return of the image: Ejus In Obitu Nostro Praesentia Muniamur – Let us be protected by his presence at the hour of our death.
On the back of the medal, we see an image of the cross, above the word Pax (peace) and several inscriptions in Latin:
CSPB: Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti – Cross of the Holy Father Benedict.
CSSML: Cruz Sacra sit Mihi Lux – The holy cross is the queen of light.
NDSMD: Non Draco sit Mihi Dux – May the devil not be my guide.
VRS: Vade Retro Satanas – Stop and retreat, Satan.
NSMV: Non Suade Mihi Vana – Drive me away from Evil.
SMQL: Sunt Mala Quae Libas – And the evil I see of you.
IVB: Ipse vene Bibas – You drink this poison.
