About the heliotrope – blood stone

According to legend, the blood stone appeared when drops of Christ's blood fell from the Cross onto a green jasper stone at its base. Many medieval Christian artists used this stone to carve scenes of martyrdom and the Crucifixion.

The name heliotrope refers to ancient times when some polished stones were considered reflections of the Sun; the appearance of the stone may therefore recall the reddish sunset that sets and is reflected on the dark green ocean (heliotrope – solar tropic). Today, in India, this stone (pulverized into a powder) is used as a medicine ingredient or as an aphrodisiac. The heliotrope is a stone of Earth and protection, which promotes love and understanding between people, solidifying friendships. The blood stone also helps with peaceful sleep.
